If this novel is anything to judge by, 'Point' have undergone an upgrading. Here is a standard, action-packed story with plenty of cliff-hangers, but the characters are fully realised and real messages are communicated. The popularity of police dramas on television will ensure this story sells - as will the themes of racism, violence and relationships under stress. The Beat will make an absorbing read for mid-ability Year 9s.
