A superbly crafted story, so well-structured that the simplicity belies the interwoven layers of meanings. Joe is the anxious and pampered baby 'sittee' and it takes Alice, baby-sitter extraordinaire, and last Princess of Afterdark, to reveal the courageous and heroic Joe Quail. A remarkable book where our most reluctant hero grows as the pages turn, but after riding a slightly supercilious flying horse and watching a genocidal dragon fight, climbing the Shinning Stairway and subduing the Emperor of Nightfall, no wonder he's a different boy when he returns home. Mum's changed too, but that's a different story.
