Adrienne Kennaway won the Kate Greenaway Medal for her illustration of this story. Judging from the moments of hushed silence that was the children's response to it, the combination of strong, economic text and the powerful illustration merited it. The story of the chamelcon's plan to teach the leopard and the crocodile a well-deserved lesson has the age-old appeal of the underdog winning through, merely by using his wits against their might!
