With the aid of alternate whole and half pages the reader takes the young girl narrator of this story through various gates and doors on an exploration of her grandparents' farmyard. This use of the split page is a favourite device of Ron Maris which, besides being fun, encourages a deeper exploration of his finely observed and detailed illustrations. The simple text in the form of both internal and external dialogue heightens the illusion of almost being inside the story.
