Part of Kingfisher’s science series, this title ties in closely to concepts covered by the Primary Science curriculum. The properties of different materials are explained in very simple but clear terms, using examples of interest to children. Full marks to the picture researcher and designer for choosing such striking images – swirling layers of sandstone, an abstract pattern of glass marbles, or dappled light underwater to illustrate ceramic tiles in a swimming pool. A positive message is given on recycling, and we learn that one of the useful results of recycled rubbish is the fleece jacket made from old fizzy drinks bottles. Practical projects are included to reinforce concepts such as the changing states of solids and liquids (melting chocolate). A pity that whoever wrote the cover copy didn’t read the finished text (we never do find out why metal ships float or see shiny coins being made) but this aside, it’s a first-class resource for the classroom library.
